Week 2 Wikis

Oops, forgot this important week. Wikis would work well in my consumer health networking group as we work to formulate new policies for our libraries, and can be used by all participants to add and change content.

Week 8 Mashups

The mashup I found was Mapdango http://mashupawards.com/mapdango/ which is a combination of Google Maps that allows location exploration with weather (WeatherBug), photos (Flickr) facts (Wikipedia), events (Eventful) and news (Google News) all at a one stop location!

When using Rollo, the hits on privacy covered the importance of privacy for credit reports and identify thefts, but when searching librarian blogs, I could not find mine???

Week 7 Podcasts and Online Hosted Videos

I found a great UTube of Super Librarian, able to leap tall bookcases, multitasker extraordinare at UTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bu-TijjVs_g
Podcasting would be a great opportunity to put a face to an explanation of how to navigate databases, where to begin to search a topic, upcoming events at the library, videos of successful past events, local celebrations in the community or workplaces.
It's a great tool and has endless potential for consumers.

Week 5 Flickr and shared photos

Sharing photos is a great way to stay in touch with family, friends, and collegues. I think that a consumer health library can readily adapt this technology to their website by highlighting the covers of new books which are added to the collection

Google docs

Google docs seems like a great feature, but would probably work more effectively with others who do not share an email system. Maybe in a university setting when a group project is assigned, or when people from different geographic areas/countries are collaborating???

Social bookmarking and tagging

Social bookmarking seems to be a great site to share with other professional colleagues and avoid the relentless search to organize one's favorites. I will certainly work on tagging more and saving less!

FaceBook and MySpace

Social networking sites have certainly been popular at my house, and even my child allowed me to "be her friend". Not having the extra time to spend on the site as she does, I still prefer the personal touch of speaking to others in person, but as the technology grows, I'm sure that I will want to remain in touch with those who use it!

Consumer health RSS feeds

RSS feeds for consumer health topics, recent research findings, and updates from leading researchers on a variety of health care topics are so important when speaking with patients and family members about information that they have read in the newspaper or seen on the news.

A couple of my favorites are the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, MedlinePLUS/National Institutes of Health, CDC...check them out!

MLA Week 2 Web 2.0

Check out my wiki on consumer health libraries at the link below. Developing a wiki is simple as 1-2-3, but determining who should be allowed to participate is a little more challenging. Perhaps I will use this as a first tool for our consumer health librarians in our area as a "talking point".

Taking this course again is helping to reinforce what I already learned. I still have encountering some difficulties with finding RSS feeds for table of contents for journals. Did I miss an important note on that?
